Governance Committee: Board Recruiter

The board recruiter supports the Governance Committee in fulfilling its fiduciary duties to appoint the best-qualified candidates for the board of directors. The board recruiter recruits, reviews, nominates and recommends candidates for election to the board or to fill vacancies on the board. As a recruiter, you will work with the chair of the Governance Committee and your fellow members to consider the applications of candidates and recommend new candidates to the board for election.

Responsibilities

  • Help revise and open the call for nominations.
  • Actively recruit and nominate candidates, including targeted outreach to diverse institutions, communities and candidates.
  • Vet all candidates to ensure that they have the proper competencies, experience and willingness to fulfill their duties and responsibilities as directors.
  • Assist in the development of a report for the board of directors that includes the nominees the Governance Committee recommends for election.
  • Recommend candidates to fill vacancies as a result of the resignation or removal of a director, as needed
  • Facilitate an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Qualifications

Required

  • Membership in Digital Collegium, which can be fulfilled at application. (Free general membership for higher education professionals would meet this requirement.)
  • Knowledge of Digital Collegium and its goals and operations
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and work comfortably with others.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding discussions.
  • Not a current board director and agreement not to seek board appointment while serving as a board recruiter.
  • Completion of implicit bias training within 30 days of joining the committee.

Preferred

  • Previous experience with a governing body of any organization.
  • Previous Digital Collegium volunteer experience.
  • Wide network of connections to reach eligible board candidates.
  • Understanding of hiring/volunteer management best practices, including inclusive recruitment strategies.

Length of appointment

  • 1 year beginning in January (or as otherwise specified by the board)

Estimated time commitment

  • The board recruiter is expected to attend nomination meetings and engage in recruitment activities, which primarily happen from January-May .
  • Additional work may be required outside of this January-May timeframe in the event of a board director vacancy.
  • The time commitment for this work varies depending on the number of nominees each year. Members should expect to spend a minimum of 2-4 hours per month from January to May with a peak commitment of roughly 12-18 hours in March and April. This time consists of independent application review and scheduled team candidate interviews.
