From complaint to compliance: Highland Community College’s journey to website accessibility

In early 2022, Highland Community College was notified by the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) that the Department of Education had received a complaint about the community college’s website lacking the necessary accessibility features to make it usable by people with disabilities. Highland reached an agreement with OCR in April 2022 to make its website accessible and subsequently underwent a detailed accessibility audit and remediation.

This session will present a case study of Highland’s experience as a small, rural community college working with OCR and making their website compliant. It will include a history of how the college arrived at the situation, how they worked with Equalize Digital to remediate accessibility problems, and lessons learned along the way. The presentation will include details on how internal communication factored into the remediation, changes Highland made to its workflow and staffing to support improved accessibility, and how remediation was approached from a development perspective.
