Link Journal: Editor

This position works as part of the Link Journal Committee to edit content for Link, The Journal of Higher Education Web Professionals. Editors will work with the Publisher/Committee Chair, Chief Editor and other editors to brainstorm story ideas, assign stories, edit the finished product and publish content to Link’s website.

Link publishes, in a way that’s both informative and fun, high-quality content by well-qualified web professionals working in higher-ed. We’ve tackled topics as diverse as mobile integration, the latest in social media, and successful project management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interesting and topical content to be published by Link.
  • Contribute ideas for content to be published by Link.
  • Work with writers to polish their stories.
  • Encourage active voice and help writers create content in a journalistic style.
  • Contact potential contributors with invitations to write articles for Link Journal. Contributors may include higher education web and marketing professionals, Digital Collegium members and conference presenters.
  • Editors may be assigned to work with regular Link contributors to publish columns or other content to Link Journal.
  • Adhere to Digital Collegium’s style guide, which follows AP Style.
  • Attend monthly Link Journal Committee meetings.
  • Facilitate an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Qualifications

Required

  • Good writing and editing skills.
  • Willingness to accept and incorporate constructive feedback on writing assignments.
  • An interest in pitching, writing and producing engaging articles for Link Journal.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines.
  • Membership in Digital Collegium, which can be fulfilled at application. (Free general membership for higher education professionals would meet this requirement.)

Preferred

  • Editing experience.
  • Previous experience writing for a publication, website or other outlet.
  • Experience interviewing sources for articles or other types of content.
  • Familiarity with AP style and web writing best practices.
  • Working understanding or willingness to learn the basics of WordPress.
  • Ability to work with project management/team communication platforms such as Slack, Clickup, etc.

Estimated time commitment

  • Members are expected to virtually attend Link Journal Committee monthly meetings.
  • The time commitment for editors varies based on what you are able to contribute to Link, with a minimum commitment of 1-2 hours per month.

Length of appointment

Two years, with the option to renew for additional terms.

Conference attendance

Conference attendance is not expected. Conference registration is not waived for this position.
