Link Journal Committee: Writer

This position works as part of the Link Journal Committee to write content for Link, The Journal of Higher Education Web Professionals. Writers will work on stories assigned by Link’s editors and may come up with their own story ideas.

Link publishes, in a way that’s both informative and fun, high-quality content by well-qualified web professionals working in higher-ed. We’ve tackled topics as diverse as mobile integration, the latest in social media, and successful project management.

Link writers are welcome to come up with their own article ideas, for standalone pieces, content series, columns or other formats. This position allows for a varied time commitment throughout the year; writers are able to contribute content based on their own availability and schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Write or work with a guest contributor to produce pieces of interesting and topical content to be published by Link. Duties related to writing may include writing in the active voice in a journalistic style, conducting interviews, and pitching story ideas to the Link Journal Committee.
  • Contribute ideas for content to be published by Link.
  • Adhere to Digital Collegium’s style guide, which follows AP Style.
  • Attend monthly Link Journal Committee meetings.
  • Facilitate an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Qualifications

Required

  • Good writing skills.
  • Willingness to accept and incorporate constructive feedback on writing assignments.
  • An interest in pitching, writing and producing engaging articles for Link Journal.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines.
  • Membership in Digital Collegium, which can be fulfilled at application. (Free general membership for higher education professionals would meet this requirement.)

Preferred

  • Previous experience writing for a publication, website or other outlet.
  • Editing experience.
  • Experience interviewing sources for articles or other types of content.
  • Familiarity with AP style and web writing best practices.
  • Working understanding or willingness to learn the basics of WordPress.
  • Ability to work with project management/team communication platforms such as Slack, Clickup, etc.

Estimated time commitment

  • Members are expected to virtually attend Link Journal Committee monthly meetings.
  • The time commitment for writers varies based on what you are able to contribute to Link.

Length of appointment

One year, with the option to renew for additional terms.

Conference attendance is not expected. Conference registration is not waived for this position.
