The session moderator will coordinate with presenters prior to their sessions to outline a plan for moderation needs and is responsible for attending and moderating all synchronous academy sessions. The moderator is invited to do all session homework and deliverables and earn a microcredential.

Responsibilities

General

  • Facilitate an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with other cultures or backgrounds.

Before the event

  • Coordinate with presenters prior to their sessions to outline a plan for session flow and moderation needs.
  • Confirm that any necessary presenter content is collected and posted to the LMS.
  • Execute a technical check with the presenter to confirm they can share any content/screens/etc they plan on using.

During the event

  • Perform moderation duties, including:
    • Manage host account and assign co-host responsibilities.
    • Activate session recording.
    • Share any housekeeping items.
    • Recap previous academy happenings and assignments due.
    • Introduce the speaker.
    • Moderate the session using the available tools in Google Meet.
    • Assist with and/or report any technical difficulties for assistance.
  • Encourage completion of evaluation forms from session attendees.
  • Preview presenter, content and homework for the next session.

After the event

  • Encourage completion of evaluation forms from session attendees via the attendee Slack channel.
  • Help monitor (with co-chairs) attendee Slack channel for questions/assistance.

Qualifications

Required

  • Membership in the association, which can be fulfilled at application. (Free general membership for higher education professionals would meet this requirement.)
  • A detail-oriented person that can stay on top of multiple responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills.

Preferred

  • Familiarization with Google Meet or Zoom.

Estimated time commitment

All commitments are virtual.

  • 1-6 months prior to the academy: optional monthly planning meetings; 1 hour per month.
    • If the moderator is interested in learning more about higher-level academy logistics.
  • 1 month prior to the academy: presentation logistic meetings; 1-3 hours in total
  • During the academy: pre-session logistics and session attendance; ~6 hours per week for 5 weeks.

Length of appointment

12 months, with the option to renew.

Conference attendance

Online academy attendance is required. Academy registration is waived for this position.
