APIs: Because copy-pasting data is so last semester

The seamless exchange of information is critical for modern higher education websites. From displaying real-time course schedules to integrating external services, APIs (application programming interfaces) enable institutions to efficiently connect and share data. eCampus supports the University System of Georgia’s collaborative ecosystem and academic programs across a system of 26 institutions throughout the state of Georgia. In this approachable session, we’ll explore five ways USG eCampus is leveraging APIs to power our websites, automating data transfer and improving the user experience. We’ll break down how we use APIs to: Automate the transfer of eCampus student orientation completions to partner institutions. Provide real-time course data on our websites, including descriptions, learning objectives and credit hours, directly from our syllabus management system, Simple Syllabus. Populate course schedules on our websites using data from Ellucian Banner. Integrate textbook information from specific institutions to ensure accurate listings on the front end. Ensure access to general education curriculum equivalency tables for participating USG institutions. Through real-world examples, we’ll discuss the benefits and challenges of implementing APIs, including performance and security strategies to ensure reliability. Whether you’re a developer, content manager or IT leader, you’ll walk away with insights on how APIs can streamline workflows and enhance the digital experience for students, faculty and staff.
